Not tried this, it seems a lot of trouble to go to unless you are growing for show? I usually just scatter seed liberally into a seed tray as onion seed are very willing to grow.

I normally sow in trays and then prick out into cellpacks although this year I sowed quite a few in Root Riot cubes. Onions in the early stages of growth don't really develop deep roots so in a way using root trainers is wasting a resource which could perhaps be better employed with another crop. Having said that, I know of one Onion exhibitor who uses root trainers so you will be in good company .

Remember Onions germinate best at around 18°c . They should germinate in 10 -20 days.

I've done leeks in root trainers. Made separating them for planting a lot easier. Good luck.

Would have never grown onions in root trainers,l
Dont see any need to do so.

I've never tried it, but it could work well. I usually sow onion seed in deep pots because they seem to transplant better with the roots going straight down; maybe because my soil is so heavy. The deep pots make them easier to untangle.

Sow in tray and pick out.

Some go for the 2 or 3 seeds per module. Plant whole module and then pick out small onions during season.

In this context, for pick out, read harvest. But given the number of trainers you have not going to be a problem for you
