Growing some early tomatoes - 2019

I sowed all my varieties on Sunday last week, 27th January, and the two beefsteak varieties have started to poke their heads through! Very exciting I'm hoping the whole tray will germinate, and they'll all be banished from the warmth of my bedroom to the much cooler front room - the two lightest rooms in the house.

I sowed my 10 seeds on the 19th January,this is what they look like just now -

I put some Brutus seeds to chit a couple of days ago, and all 12 are now showing a root (+ freebies which were included in the order) - time to move them into some compost.

I have never tried growing early tomatoes before as I have no greenhouse and only grow Stupice tomatoes outdoors. But, after reading the earlier posts on this thread, thought I would try Red Robin and Tiny Tim tomatoes as they looked the right size for keeping on a window sill.

I sowed 6 seeds of each about 3 weeks ago using a cuboard above my boiler to help germination and then as soon as they germinated (4 days), I transfered them under my 'grow light'. I converted the top shelf of an old bookcase with a cool/daylight LED striplight which I keep on for about 15 hours a day and I am really pleased with the results so far.



I hope I will have some early tomatoes this year!

Summerhouse with a radiator set up close by.. wife will kill me if she catches me with the radiator on

Probably too cool then!

At 10C constant temp toms take 43 days to germinate
15C = 14 days
20C = 6 days
25C = 6 days.
