  • As it was raining most of the day I spent most of the time in the greenhouse.

Got another 7 tomato plants in the ground (5 Ildi 2 Geranium Kiss) plus the other 2 Trinidad Perfume plants and a purple sweet potato plant down one half.

Took advantage of a lull in the rain to pop out and plant the 4 varieties of cucumbers (Chinese Slangen, Crystal Lemon, Burpees Tasty and Armenian Yard Long).

Took down a bit of temporary trellis from the end of the fruit fence. It was me t to be in for o e season as support for the trombone squash but that was 2015 and as I want to train my grapes that way it's now or never.

Back into the greenhouse to start off the other half, putting in trellis for the climbers. Then in went the Achocha, the Trombone Squash and the Carasello. There's another trellis to act as an overflow for Achocha and trombones plus a 5th incase the Malabar Spinach germinate.

Just got 2 sweet potato plant, lemon verbena, Vietnamese Coriander, okra and some beans to fit in.

        • Planted out 7 more tomatoes, 4 cucumbers, 3 courgettes, and moved 2 mystery volunteer squashes. Also built a windbreak to protect my poor toms (probably fairly pointless as the wind direction keeps changing),

          • Built a new chilli grow type thing.
Potted up the last 4 mystery chillies into pop bottles.
Fed all the pop bottle chillies.
Tied up tomatoes and removed armpits.
Did some weeding until rain stopped play.

            • Planted out some beetroot seedlings (Subeto and Boldor) and some shallots that I bought a few months ago and forgot.
Did a bit of weeding and dock-deadheading before they set seed. That's what I call Emergency weeding - for when I don't have time to remove them, roots and all.
Picked 3 courgettes and did a happy dance.

              • Finished digging my raspberry bed, dug in manure, made a make-shift path down the middle from some old breezeblocks lying around on my plot, and planted five each of summer and autumn raspberries.

I also went to a local country fair today, and ended up buying another grapevine for my allotment. It was only £6.50, and looked just as big and healthy as the £15 one I already bought, so I couldn't help myself.

                • Re-ordering my planting programme to please bees - they were having such fun on the Phalaoecea (sp?) that I didn't clear out the two beds with it in as green manure...

                  Busy planting time
sowed: Mangetoute (well, on Thurs), Beans (think they might be Blauhilde or similar, climbing, purple until cooked), French climbing beans, peas, kabuki peas, planted: courgettes, kale, broccoli, beetroot, and some bocking 14 comfrey

It's flipping dry out there, lots of watering needed.

                    Tied up radish flower stems.
Fed mystery chillies in the big blue tub with home made feed.
Added some lyme to beds 4 & 5.
Planted out some purple sprouting broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage January King.
                    Sown seeds.
Weeded in front of house, nearly finished it.

                    • Sad day in south London.
All 50 of my red onions had bolted, so gave in and harvested the sad looking little onions today.

Sorry, I have visions of a herd of onions scurrying off down the street with you chasing them...

                            • I checked all the pots that have been potted up so far, to see how they've coped with all the rain that we've had so far. So far, so good. The 1st earlies are coming along very nicely. Not quite to the flowering stage, but give them another couple of weeks, & hopefully I will have potatoes. Woo! Hoo! The other day, I harvested some lettuce leaves from the 'cut-&-come-again' lettuce. I couldn't taste anything, but hubby could (so he says )
