      • Sat and watched my plants grow. Saw my blackcurrant bush has got what'll be a blackcurrant at the end of the season. I'm so proud. 1 blackcurrant. If i cut the toast down to cm sized portions i'll have enough for a small bite.
Somehow i expected more for all the gallons of water the plants get.

        • Weeded Bed 17.
Planted some thyme in Bed 13 which will, eventually, be completely edged with thyme. I know it should be Mint or Marjoram, and they are there too, but I started the thyme border a few years ago before I thought about alphabetical beds.

Planted out SP's tray of Lucky Jar seeds beginning with S . Sorry, they went in Bed 20 but there was no room in Bed 19. Couldn't identify some of the seedlings - big, chunky plants but I'm pretty sure that there are some Salvia farinacea Victoria amongst them - they look lovely.

          Went to see my Mum...........

Generally blackcurrants are pretty reliable croppers - is this a newly planted bush just starting to get going, or is there more to it than that ?

            • newly planted. As one gets older it gets harder to stick stuff in the ground to wait 10 years for it to fruit. So if it doesnt show signs of strong growth in the first year or two it gets torn out. Your right i think this plants going to be a good cropper in a couple of years.
Meanwhile i took the heartbreaking decision to burn my infected lemon tree. Poor tree.

              • Cleared what I think use to be a compost area from my allotment (a bed with black weed plastic on the soil and piles of old prunings and other plant waste on top).
There's plenty of compost underneath all the old prunings, which should be good for the soil underneath. Soil is pretty compacted, though, due to being under weed membrane, and although the membrane has killed most of the weeds off, it sure didn't stop the couch grass. It's everywhere, but on top and underneath the membrane, it's stolons having woven themselves through the weaving of the membrane.

                • (Yesterday) finished off building brassica cage with extra bit of net I bought, then planted turnips, psb, kale and sprouts, then put out a few leeks , sowed swede seeds, and gave all the new stuff a good watering in. Definitely quicker now I have one watering can for each hand ;-)

                  • Weeded Bed 18 and the half-compost bins and barrels where I'm planting courgettes this year. The 4 I planted a few weeks ago have survived and there are a couple of courgettes thriving. The early courgettes weren't pollinated, stayed puny, turned yellow and fell off.
                    Poor little fellas.
I have a cunning plan for the "barrels" - to plant DFBs alongside the courgettes so they'll be up off the ground and easier to see. May put some spare toms in there too, to trail down.
Also cleared the wire netting that Big Richard the Tromba grew on last year. Going to sow mangetout there - tomorrow if I have time.

My little furry and feathered friends can be a bit overwhelming at times. Sat on the grass, weeding, minding my own business, when along they come. Ted climbs on my lap, Spud lies alongside, head between his paws resting on a log, Bess brings her spikey ball and drops it just where I'm weeding. One of the chooks is pecking all the bits of dirt off my legs, the other is preening herself behind me, fluffing up her feathers against my back.
Its no wonder I achieve so little in the garden.

                    • Today I got more done than I expected.

Finally managed to get my runner beans planted on their support cane wigwams. Looking good with the mange tout and main crop peas and broad beans growing well next door so hoping they follow suit.

I put additional support up for my sugar snap peas and spaghetti squash which I'm hoping will get on well together.

I also got my 9 early sweetcorn plants and single courgette (I sowed loads of seeds this year, don't know what happened?!) in and planted out my oregano (a rescued stray from between the paving slabs) and Italian parsley plus some water cress in a seperate herb bed I'm making which already has some sad looking chive seedings and a clump of madly rampaging thyme.

Mindful of the clock ticking down to my brothers wedding party which is being held in the garden mid June, I got a few more bedding plants in the front border and mulched round a bed I planted up during the week.

Then after a break I went back out and cleared weeded and pruned another section ready to plant up next week. Busy busy!

Oh and I put in another couple of tomatoes in the greenhouse and spotted my first little mini cucumber growing!

Feel like I should have done a mike (or trowel!) drop when I came back in..
Biting off more than I can chew since 1983

                      • A bit of watering and then some heavy duty hedge cutting back to clear the corner for my shed. Felt like a murderer for cutting down may blossom, even though I was only taking it about 10% of the blossom just in my stretch of hedge... I have an over- active conscience.

Cleared clutter from the corner and dragged my tool box into its new location.

                        Sowed second lot of radishes.

                        • Did some watering. Hasn't rained in a while now.
Moved my allium bulbs to the final position in my perennial bed.
Planted in 6 more strawberry runners. That's it for strawberries now.
Continued digging perennial weeds from my new bed.
Got rid of overwintered swiss chard, pretty plants they are.
Put up netting for dwarf peas. Very fiddly job.

                          • Now that lots of the tomatoes are outside have got more space in the gh. So started putting the gh tomatoes into their final or next to final pots. Moved gh garlic pots into cold frame and potted on some borlotti bean seedlings as they are growing really fast and bed not ready for them to go out yet.

                            • Today I've potted up to mystery cucurbits that came up in the home made compost I'm growing a melon in.

                              • Planted up the new herb plants & also some herb seeds in the same pot. Each herb nicely labelled. Go me . Had a break for lunch, then I planted up the 2nd early seed potatoes, fed the first lot of potatoes & topped them up with more compost. I am going to have to order more compost
