  • Discovered my sauerkraut has gone bad.
That's the second time now. I need to find out what I'm doing wrong. I never have any problems with other fermented vegetable. I've done cucumbers, onions, carrots, green tomatoes. All fine.

    • Yesterday, potted up some All year round and salad bowl lettuce, then planted rest into the garden, this morning fed GH toms, pinched out armpits.
      Location....East Midlands.

      • Watered everything...again.
        Dead headed dahlias and sweetpeas.
Picked the last of the strawberries and put away the netting that covered them.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

        • Started my herb box, and one for my daughter-in-law, repotted 2 strawberry plants, decided to experiment with some carrot seeds in the poly tunnel.

          • Planted out some pot-grown courgettes, Chinese cabbage and peas.
            Weeded.

Started making my new compost bin from some pallets I salvaged from work. I skimmed off the turf and started screwing the pallets together. More couch grass roots than I was expecting; I may have to line it with plastic and cardboard before putting my stuff for composting onto it.

            • I picked up some plug trays with teeny tiny plugs - never seen any so small before!

Tidied up in the back garden, as I was too tired for the allotment. Ate strawbs from my vertical planter and they were delicious.

Tied up the malabar spinach around stakes so they got something to climb up.

Potted up some cucumbers that I sowed late that are growing like mad.

I'm going to Wilko after work tomorrow as a friend messaged me and said the seeds are half price in there. I don't need anymore, of course, but I WANT more!

              • Today, I saw to my Triffid beans. The jut netting seemed to have worked a treat, & flower buds are starting to appear. I haven't fed them yet, but there's been (sorry, no pun intended ), quite a lot of rain recently, so that seems to have helped. Checked on the tomato plant, and some tomatoes are now appearing. My dad used to tap the canes every now & again, which, according to him, distributes the pollen. So that's what I have been doing. Dead headed one of the magnolias

                • Weeded 5 beds, emptied 5 spud bags & washed them ready for next year, rain stopped play. Did some housework.

                  • Finished making my new compost bin, and transferred everything from the old dalek bin and a huge pile I had been collecting into it. It's now nearly full already.
I also found half a dozen slow worms in the process, so they are now rehomed in my new bin.

Also tied up my goji berry, which was trailing all over the place. In the process, I noticed it was covered in flower buds. Hopefully I'll get fruit.

                    • Weeded another 4 beds
                      Harvested stuff
                      Collected seeds
                      Sow seeds.
Got shouted at by a very angry adder.
Just been a rumble of thunder, so now being sat on by a scared dog.

                      • A bit of a mixed day for me.
Started out well and then daughter in law came in with the baby.
After they went I got some dianthus potted up.
Then we had thunder so work stopped.
Back out to do some more gardening and the heavens opened.
Hoping to get back out to finish the job.

                        • I've emptied out a grow bag (bag for life really) that had a rogue spud growing in it that had probably survived the compost heap. I let it grow on, just for fun, rather than sacrificing the potato for tomatoes.

I emptied it out today and I got a massive harvest of........... two potatoes. Oh!!

                          • I'm away from home visiting family at the mo and missing my little green babies - I love summer holidays but I hate being away while everything is growing and changing fast! Today at least I know the allotment has been watered.

                            • Weeded tunnel bed.
                              Tidied all tunnels.
Moved 5 mystery into 1st tunnel.
                              Collected seeds
                              Pollinated chillies
Fed chillies, chilli grows, toms, cucumber, melons, aubergine, squash, pumpkin, courgette, dwarf french bean & asparagus.
Cut all the edges around the tunnels.
                              Washed garden chairs.
                              Strimmed & mowed everywhere.

                              • This morning i did some tomato husbandry
Wound new growth round the twines
Cut the top off any that had reached the top of their twine
Removed weird new growth at the end of trusses?
                                Removed all sideshoots
Removed all lower leaves that were touching the ground
                                Weeded under the plants
Supported trusses that were touching the ground
                                Fed them
                                Filled up their irrigation tank
Picked the first four toms (Maskotka)!

Also removed some oversized courgettes, picked a few good ones to eat, and picked three cucumbers.
                                He-Pep!
