  • own sets from seed - update 1

In mid summer, I sewed a few hundred onion seeds in a garden planter, with view to growing my own onion sets.
Around end of september, I harvested about 100 sets for this year.

There were however about 30 not quite large enough to take for sets, so I put the planter in my cold greenhouse, with a hope that they may continue to grow for a while longer and I could harvest the sets later.

They didn't really grow any more, just sat there dormant.
These have survived up to press, and are still in the planter, still with green leaves but no bigger now than they were in September/October.

I doubt that I could transplant these without them bolting, so i'm now ooking forward to an early crop, although they may be a little cramped.

Cool - so that's all gone really well! I sowed seeds not long ago and put them in the greenhouse, and upon checking them, I think I have a few sprouting!

I've never grown onion from seed before, so that's dead exciting for me lol

I'm not calling any success until I see how the sets perform.

We eat onions by the ton in our house, so I'll be buying some commercially grown sets just in case mine flop.
And possibly growing some from seed also.

since pricking out my scatter sown onions, for me it will be better to take the bother and plant 1 seed per smaller sized cell trays, job done once, then they can grow on in peace, got some more to sow,and to prick out, teadious job.
