  • Over the top gardening

This thread is the opposite end of the scale to VC's no fuss gardening.

Who's going all out growing more than they've ever grown before?

I'm going for the most productive year ever. Especially as this in all reality will be my last year here in this wonderful garden . ( I would kill to stay, apparently I'm not allowed to do that ).

So my plan is to grow and sell as much as possible. I'll restock my own supply as well but as I've go so much in the freezers from last year still. There won't be much needed.
It's going to be all stuff I know grows here. No experimenting.........well apart from the little chilli challenge .

I'll be growing this lot ( I always grow this lot, but going with more). Quantity to be decided
    Runner bean
    dwarf French bean
    Pea
    Swiss chard
    Spinach
    Kale
    cabbage
    cauliflower
    Broccoli
    Brussels sprouts
    Courgette
    Pumpkin
    squash
    Swede
    Turnip
    Leek
    Beetroot
    Carrots
    radish
    Spring Onion
    Onions
    Tomatoes
Lots of Chillies (60+,not including challenge)
    Sweet pepper
    Cucumber
    Aubergine
    melons
    lettuce
    Lot of Baby salad mix
Lots of micro greens / herbs
    Water Cress
    Spuds

My plan this year is to grow what I can't buy in the shops, so trench celery, biiiiiig onions and (hopefully)monster leeks are top of my list, lots of carrots of varieties not usually in the shops will pretty much fill the raised beds. Tattie varieties not in the shops and some decent brassicas are in the rabbit proof plot and the greenhouse will be tommies of 6 varieties, chilles(only 2 types) butternut squash, ridge cukes and sweetcorn, that will be about it apart from fruit like strawbs, rasps, guzzgogs, apples and blackcurrants.

I wouldn't say I'll be growing more than ever before, because that was probably last year, and I still have serious gluts of things (notably tomatoes). Still, I'll be growing the following:

      Staple crops
Potatoes Nicola, Charlotte, Desiree plus either Arran Pilot or Lady C depending if I can get Lady C
Carrots Nantes Frubund, Marion, Eskimo, Nandor, Sweet Candle, Samurai
      Spinach Amazon, Red Vein
      Beetroot Boldor, Boltardy
Lettuce various especially Warpath, Salad Bowl and a couple of mixes
      Onions Sturon
      Leeks Oarsman, Northern Lights, Musselburgh
Peas Meteor, Hurst Greenshaft, Terrain and Geisha if I can get it
Beans Stardust (runner) and Sonesta (dwarf french)
Broccoli etc PSB Rioja, Calabrese Sakura and probably Brokali Endeavour
Tomato Shirley, Balconi red, Ferline, Sungold, Brandy Boy and probably Oh Happy Day
      Cucumber Cucino
      Parsnip probably Hollow Crown

Extras to fit in around the place
      Turnip Oasis
      Kohlrabi Azure Star
      Courgette zucchini
      Florence Fennel Romanesco
      Cabbage Hispi, Spring Hero
      Celeriac Monarch

      Indoors only
      Pepper Snackbite
      Basil
      Microgreens

      Fruit
      Apple James Grieve
Apricot Aprigold (if it flowers this year)
      Blackcurrant Ben Sarek
Blueberries Bluecrop, Dixie and hopefully Pink Lemonade
      Gooseberry Captivator
Raspberry Glen Ample, Ruby Falls (if it survives last year's sawfly attack)
      Rhubarb (unknown variety)
Strawberry Marshmello, Elsanta, Just Add Cream, Buddy, Honeoye, unknown variety at allotment, possibly Malwina, Framberry
      White currant White Versailles

      Hopeful rather than confident
Cauliflower Maybach (if I can get it), Snowball
      Romanesco broccoli
      Melon Magenta

      Might also grow
Choy Sum, Komatsuna, Mizuna, Namenia, Mibuna, Pak Choi
      Parsley
      Kale Red Russian
      Summer Leek Lincoln
      Swede Gowrie
      Sweet Potato

Thinking of purchasing a couple of patio fruit trees, possibly cherries and/or a pear

No doubt other things or varieties that pop up unexpectedly will be added to the list!

I'm definitely growing more, as I was thwarted last year, but still in the deciding phase.

I feel so inadequate. I also feel immense jealousy.

I also will be growing more. I didn’t spend every spare weekend from September to December, plus 2 weeks annual leave, digging out carpets and building terraced beds just to leave them fallow this year....

Soft fruit was planted last autumn (raspberries, currants and one goosegog), so should hopefully start cropping this year.
Planning to trial hotbed growing with some early salads, spring onions beetroot and parisian carrots.
Rest of the plot will contain much the same as last year, but with tomatoes in GH rather than outdoors. I am also hoping to finally grow a parsnip (2 failed years so far), as well as some celery, aubergine and giant pumpkins I was given for xmas.

Definitely more veggy growing this year as last year it was de-prioritised

Growing what ever takes my fancy.
Growing pumpkins in flower beds I don't fill.
Trying to grow a giant pumpkin in the meadow patch.
First time grafting toms and cucurbits.
First year trying to breed my own toms.
Grafting apples after a couple of years rest
              Creating a new herb border.

Just a few things to tie me over

I think I’m joining in with this movement- no idea where I’m going to put everything this year!!! Going to be using both greenhouses (they came with the house lucky me!!) I’m considering digging up more of the lawn to make my plot bigger.... but maybe I should wait another year so I’m more experienced and haven’t got so much decorating to do.....

I'm hoping to grow a lot more this year, but I'm slightly stymied by being away over easter, so everything will either need to be after that, or sufficiently robust to survive time without watering (auto system in the greenhouse). Careful perusing of planting times required...

I'm going way over the top this year too!

My list of things to grow:
                    Permanent features:
Apple, Plum, Pears, Gooseberries, Raspberries, Strawbs, Blueberries, Red and black currants, rhubarb

                    Runner bean
Butter beans (massive ones I’ve found in a supermarket in Sweden) – happy to share if you send me a stamped envelope!
                    Dwarf French bean
Pea – for the first time for years. Let’s see if I can get the hang of shelling them lol
                    Swiss chard
                    Spinach
Kale – at least four varieties, but need lots as I eat heaps of it.
Cabbage – winter, hispi, red, all sorts
                    Brussels sprouts
Courgette, yellow and green, (no round ones – disappointment of the year last year), and tromboncino of course!
                    Pumpkin, spaghetti squash
                    Swede
                    Turnip
                    Leek
                    Garlic
                    Beetroot
                    Carrots
                    Spring Onion
                    Onions – from seed
                    Tomatoes – lots and lots!
                    Chillies
                    Sweet pepper
                    Cucumber
                    Salad mix
                    Spuds
                    Asparagus
And I’m sure there’s more – I just can’t think of it right now! Basically, my seed box will vomit most of it out this year, as it desperately needs refreshing

We've got a new bit of plot, currently covered in soggy cardboard, so will definitely be growing more. Don't know what yet though, was going to look through the seed catalogues but decided to list out the existing packets first. The list went on and on and on; had to start a new page and I'm still missing some PSB seeds I'm sure were left over and a half packet of Big Daddy tomatoes I came across the other week......

I’m with Lumpy, feeling slightly inadequate
Spuds, runners, salad crops, carrots, tomatoes
Too many caterpillars on the brassica experiment last year, so they are out
I’m still open for trying something new though

                            Spring onions.
                            Peppers.
                            Cucumber.
                            Gooseberry.

                            Raspberry.
                            Plum.
Bought a packet of red cabbage so going to try a few heads.
                            Also growing some calabrese,
First time trying....patty pan squash.. I dont know anything about it but giving it a try.
Flowers, several but dahlias and sweetpeas will be top of my list.
                            Oh, and some carrots, Rondo.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I'm sure I have those weird things too, lurking somewhere. Despite all I said, I may have to join you with these.
