  • Succession planning

    Hi everyone.
This is my 1st year with allotment and am planning what to grow. I have made my plan and can see that once I harvest my 1st early potatoes that bed is empty, as this will be I guess mid July what suggestions for planting in this space to follow on.
Was thinking maybe sweetcorn but is this a bit late?
    Thanks
    Mike.

I'm pondering the same thing, having just bought some Wilja seed potatoes, which I intend to plant last week of March, and with any luck will be harvested by late July.

I've not had much luck with sweetcorn, so I'm hoping to be ready to put in winter cabbages in their place, but I will need something else too, as I won't need that many cabbages. Suggestions welcome

I plant my second crop of cabbage in July (Golden Acre) ready for cropping late Oct, early Nov. I also plant a few more beetroot then as well.

I would certainly not try sweetcorn that late where I am.

I will be putting some spring cabbages, broccoli raab and some ‘all year round’ cauliflowers this year.
Relatively fast growing crops like lettuce, some carrots, beetroot, radishes should also work well.
Maybe peas or french/runner beans, turnips or oriental veg like pak choi /mizuna for stir frys?

I find useful follow on crops, started in pots so that they get going (and are big enough to withstand slug attack) are cabbages, broccoli, brokali, kale, romanesco, turnips, swede, leeks, beetroot, winter spinach and florence fennel. All of these will stand transplanting (I start turnips and swedes in loo roll insides to minimize root disturbance), and all are reasonably hardy.
