  • Drumhead cabbage recommendations

Just been reading cariann's thread about Christmas drumhead cabbage, and it occurred to me that I've never (knowingly) grown a drumhead cabbage. We eat a load of savoy cabbage and I've grown the pointy sweetheart kind in the past. For this year, I've bought Goldvital seeds. It seems to be what the Germans call a 'butter cabbage'. Thought I'd give it a try. But maybe I ought to try a drumhead too.

    Any recommendations?

I have just sown red drumhead cabbage from seekay today! I'll let you know how I get on, but for £0.79 for 500 seeds, I'll be happy with whatever comes up

Two votes for red drumhead, and the first two votes at that. So it must be good. Thanks.

I like January king which is a drum head variety. I didn't do it last year but I sow in the summer. Keep in pots and then plant in my GH borders when the toms come out. I get to pick some as a whole cabbage....but in early Spring I just pick as spring greens.

^To be honest, I haven't really grasped the notion of spring greens. Maybe I need to look into this a bit more.

OK, guys. I've bought some Red Drumhead seeds. Trying not to think about January King...

How far apart do you space your Red Drumhead plants? I've looked on the web and have found recommendations for anything from 30 to 75 cm. I guess the farther apart, the bigger the head eventually. But what do you do?

It doesn't give planting advice on my seed packet, and I've never grown them before, so I'll follow this with interest I'd hazard a guess at more like 60cm or more apart - they get biiig.

If you want a good round cabbage that is excellent cooked or raw try golden arce

Another vote golden acre. I grow that every year as well.

Sorry: previous post edited, as my question was irrelevant. Not the first time.

Thanks for the recommendation, guys. I see Golden Acre is a summer cabbage. I'm sorted for those this year, but I'll remember it for next year. Is there a difference between Golden Acre and Golden Acre Primo or are they different names for the same cabbage?

Golden Acre planted in late July will give you cabbages to cut in December

I plant mine at 18 in equidistant spacing as I don't want huge cabbages that feed a big family.

GL, by late November we're down to -9 ºC. Do you reckon they'd cope with that?

                            And thanks, TS. Perfect advice.
