Peas and Beans

As there are only the two of us in the house I intend to grow both peas and beans n the one small area the length is only 5ft. but want to grow the two crops together I am looking for varieties that would grow to about 5ft so that my OH can reach them, is there any recommendations for that

I know French beans can grow tall but you can stop them around 5/6ft and that should encourage more side growth? I always stop mine when they get to the top of the poles.

They grow in different ways - peas have tendrils and like to cling whilst beans twine themselves around poles so you may need different structures for each.
I grow beans on a GH frame so the beans cllmb to 4', then across the roof and dangle down. That way, it doesn't matter how tall they want to grow, they'll still be in reach.
How about an archway with netting on one side and poles on the other and a mixture in the middle, overhead?

You can grow Alderman peas on pea netting on one side of an A frame and pinched out French beans on the other side. I always need to tie strings from one end of a frame to the other at about 1 ft apart as the peas grow upward, though. (otherwise they tend to collapse off the frame in the slightest breeze )

Thelma I don't have the space to make an A frame, but thanks for the suggestion, Scarlet thanks for the info about stopping them that will help and VC I was thinking that they both would climb up a net but now I will put some canes in to allow the beans to coil up them, so thanks

The beans won't climb netting - I've tried planted peas and beans mixed together and it doesn't work. You need the bean sticks spaced away from the netting so the beans have clear air around the sticks to climb up them .

These were very tall mangetout, ordinary peas would be much shorter (as the ones behind) - there is 1m of mesh between 2 posts with peas growing up and 2 stakes (canes would be better) at each end. The beans climbed along the horizontal pole which was about 7ft high, but you could make it lower. My bed is 2m long and 3ft wide, but I didn't need the whole width for this arrangement.
