  • Good time to cut bean poles and pea sticks

For anyone who has (legal) access to hazel, ash, birch or similar, now is a good time to get some stuff cut while the leaves are off.

I use hazel mostly - a good straight bit is useful as a bean pole and the twiggy bits off the top get used for peas. Bundling up the twiggy stuff with binder twine makes them easier to carry and store.

( please move this post mods, if you feel it would fit better in a different section)

    Thank you for the reminder.

I have a tree in my front garden that puts up shoots from the ground every year - they'll be fine for peas I think.

My neighbour has a massive lilac tree in his front garden. I'm gonna see if he'll let me cut that down entirely. I could do with the long branches for bean frames.

I grow bamboo just for bean sticks.
Thanks for the prompt, Nick, as I like them to dry off a bit before using them for structures.

Good plan to dry them off - if you cut them and put them straight in the ground you can end up with a new tree.
