  • Modular seed sowing for a newbie

If I were to use these

    https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-3-...erts/p/0183654

to sow my veg in, would you recommend I enlarge the holes first to allow me to push out the plants?

They're very flimsy and don't last more than one season, I've found.
No need to enlarge the holes.

Agree with Veggiechicken, they are very flimsy but can be used. I supported them in seed trays as not rigid enough on their own. Also depends on what you are growing but I found that the smaller celled ones worked much better for me for me with most seeds, I think they are 40s. Reason being was that when I came to plant out with those 24s the seedling(s) hadn't filled the module so wasn't very easy to get out, leading to damage of the module and potential damage of the plant.

Another way round it is to have a mooch round your nearest garden center - sometimes they have piles of use plastic trays of different sorts which you can have for free.

100% agree with whats already been posted, they are ok as a quick fix if need be,but deffo 1 season only, the 24 size it suitable for the likes of bedding plants that bush out and make lots of roots, before they go into the ground, some plants need a longer root space than they can give, maybe if you were to say what kind of seed you want to grow,we could advise you further,as in,tom seeds sow a few in a small pot approx 1inch apart, then transplant into 3inch pots for growing space, until ready for the permenant place to grow ext, hope this helps you.

I realise they are flimsy, I intend using them in seed trays.
All my sowing will be vegetables.

Would the 15 cell ones with (I guess from the website) 2.75 inch cells be ok for runner beans?
            Tomatoes?

I have been reading about starting beetroot off in small cells.
            Do lettuce transplant?

I sow runner beans into loo roll /kitchen towel inners.
I sow tomatoes straight into smallish pots.
Beetroot in cells works fine, I multisow 4 to a cell
Lettuce transplant Ok, I start mine in a seed tray and then prick out into modules.

Runner beans, peas, sweet peas like deep modules as they have long roots. that why people use loo rolls to start them off.
The issue with flimsy modules is - they're a waste of money! They have to be used in seed trays because they're not rigid enough to support themselves. Better to pay a bit more and have something that lasts.

What would you recommend as a more durable solution?

Its hard to recommend some without seeing them. There are none in Wilkos.
I'm reusing ones that I've had bought seedlings in.
Maybe somebody on here can recommend a make?
