  • Raised beds - orientation

In our new garden I wish to construct some raised beds, mainly due to anno domini beginning to take its toll.
Am I correct in thinking they should run East/West, so the rows I plant across the bed are North/South?

My beds run North/South, but I grow in blocks rather than rows.

I wouldn't bother too much about orientation, unless you are gardening in an acre or more - first thing on most plots is to work out where your main path for getting a wheelbarrow through will go - then site things like shed, compost heap, fruit tree etc which are awkward to move - whats left is available for beds to suit you and what you fancy growing - so mostly you don't have a lot of freedom to vary shapes etc of those beds.

Bare in mind, if you are going for a no dig type setup, you need the beds to be narrow enough that you can work them from the sides.

As long as they're in a sunny spot I don't think the plants are fussy...

Again, dont think it makes any difference as long as they get the sun

Never thought about it to be honest. It was more about fitting the space. If I think about it I plant north/south but it’s prettty sunny and sheltered so not really an issue.
