I am thinking of growing these this year but know nothing g about them as I have never grown any type of squash.
Any advice or tips appreciated.
Are they worth growing?
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
I have grown the yellow pattypans and they are sooo tasty! They keep fairly well too, and sliced up they look funky (they can grow really quite big!), and if you pick them small and cook them whole - you will get some oooh's and aaaah's if you serve them to people that have never tried them. Awesome roasted - I lived off these last summer - very prolific!
I'm trying white ones this year too, so will go for a bit of both
Me too, going to be growing quite a few different squash varieties but there's so much choice.
Regarding patty pan, do you allow them to grow on the floor? or with them being quite small, is it best to grow vertically?
Are they bushy like the courgette or rambling like a pumpkin?
I planted just one of these this year, a seed from Fothergill's variety pack, but what grew wasn't a Patty Pan, but rather something more like a Jack Be Little pumpkin. Packing mixup, or accidental hybrid, I don't know, but the last of the fruits is still sitting happily in storage - and I still don't know what a Patty Pan tastes like.
I grew them last year but had a aphid infestation that took me a while to get on top of so only ended up with about 4 patty pans I roasted them they were lovely like a meaty courgette OH who hates courgettes or any squash really liked them! Probably helped that I said they were roasted UFO’s haha
I plan on growing them again this year and will hopefully get a better crop!
I grew some patty pans last year. Found them to be more prolific than my courgette plants growing in the same muck heap and one other bed. So much so that I dug a couple up mid-season because I couldn’t eat/preserve/give them away fast enough!

The ones I grew were quite compact. Sorry, I don't remember the variety. They don't ramble, and the fruits kind of grow from the centre of the plant and don't touch the ground until the fruits get heavy.
