Baby lettuce and spinach thinnings from the hotbed at the allotment today - just seed leaves and 2 small true leaves, but gorgeous in a sandwich. Photo of hotbed to follow.

These were difficult to take as I couldn't see what I was photographing due to the bright sunshine. The top photo is the whole hotbed, the bottom one shows the lettuces (Black Seeded Simpson) that I harvested some of on the right, and the spinach is the row on the far left, mostly out of the picture unfortunately.

If you use your imagination you can just see the first signs of a few carrots germinating mid way between the 2 rows of lettuces.

I shall adhere to this and comply!

Hello again, VC, it’s time for my annual arise from hibernation, and I hope I haven’t placed myself I danger by emerging from it too soon; I’ve been reading on the BBC website today that certain animals are risking it already this year and thinking winter has finally ended, so I’m following their guidance on this one. I’m sure they know the weather better than me, even without the aid of Carol Kirkwood or that other really pretty girl that we have on Yorkshire TV.

I hope we’re not all driven back indoors (or under piles of leaves, depending on what you are) but I mowed my lawn today, and it all felt fine.

I also had my first cup of tea (Yorkshire, what else?) outside today, so that’s probably another first for the time of year.

Have fun whatever you’re planning for this season, and we’ll speak again really soon...

PS Am I still a registered nutter even though I’ve been away a little while?

              Happy Fabruary, H&V.
This warm weather brings all the Nutters out to enjoy the sunshine so I'm not at all surprised to see you today.

                Dear VC

Thank you for your very swift reply: It feels like I’ve never been away!

I’ve officially ‘come out’* now for this year, so let the fun and frolics begin all over again!

*Obviously not in a gayish sort of way (As Mrs H&V would hopefully confirm)...

I lifted a number of young carrots yesterday that I had growing n the greenhouse, have also been eating parsley, as OH is moaning because I am eating garlic in the morning (and the parsley does NOT kill the smell of garlic from your breath, nor eating mint, apples or brushing teeth) any suggestions that work would be gratefully received, and no stop taking the garlic is not one that I am looking for
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Member of the Nutters Club but I think I am just there to make up the numbers

You could feed some garlic to OH then she wouldn't notice.

Baking soda mouth wash might do it.

Harvested the first 2 sticks of rhubarb which I'd dug up in November, planted in a 30 litre bucket and forced under a dalek over winter. Sorry, I ate them before I remembered you wanted photos!

Pea shoots! I put them in a home made burger with (shop bought) purple sprouting broccoli on the side
