    Oh now that's good!

Nearest Range is apparently 80 miles away, bit far to go for seeds methinks.

There's a Home Bargains and a Poundshop in Inverness, I'm just not sure when I could get through there, it's half hour drive or almost an hour on the bus.

My mutt (who was once pictured here in all his glory in my polytunnel) isn't really able to be left. He has Larangeal Paralysis and also MegaEsophagus, both of which are basically life threatening conditions as they could cause him to choke and stop breathing. He had a seizure two days ago. I don't like leaving him, I'd never forgive myself if something happened if I left him, he's 11.5 now and is my sidekick. Literally, he never leaves my side, he's seen me through the last few years and it's my turn to do the same for him now.

Anyway, that has nothing whatsoever to do with seeds or compost. Soz. As they say.

How do you manage going shopping for anything then? If you only shop online - Morveg is good for seed.

I do everything online, shopping, banking etc. Gone are the days of B&Q cheap greenhouse hunting at the drop of a hat.

I'm not usually out very much at all right now. I don't expect I'll have him for too much longer so I don't mind.

All that said, I'm just back from Lidl. I took him with me and left him in the car for the whole 10 minutes I was in there. I got some of the cheap seeds mentioned by Baldy, there was a stand right at the door. All I need now is cheap compost.

Any molehills visible where you are? If they're on public land, take a bag and a trowel - it's perfect loam usually.

sparrow100 is a pro-bono legal expert... Or possibly not.

                  Definition of public land etc.

Just be careful/mindful of what you are doing...

I second Lumpy and Scarlet: Moreveg.com are very good for small packets of seeds at reasonable prices if you can't get what you want at Lidl. If you want larger amounts than Moreveg sells, you could look at Premier Seeds Direct for decent prices and cheap postage.

                        Good luck.

                            poorly hound

You actually managed to go into and out of a discount German supermarket with just what you came for?
We went into Aldi on Saturday and came out with a packet of long screw-drivers, a crate of beer and a scented candle...

… we only went in for a packet of tomatoes (and to see if the Sunday Gardening stuff was out yet...)

As you mention raised beds I would suggest that you look at Moreveg for seeds.
They do what is best described as smallish amounts for easily 50-60p a pack.

They postage is extra so allow say £1:50 - think it is less but that covers it. Leaves say £8:50 so you should be able to pick out 15 or so options and £10 covers it all. Seeds at least for me arrive rapidly.

The way MV operate suits me and sounds like could be useful to you. My "problem" is that I usually have seeds left over and sit wondering what to do with them. Presently growing some of last years tomato seeds with this years.

In diet terms what do you need? Half reads Iron but not sure.
Apples mean trees and that means time, also you need an early apple for it to get sufficent sun.
Lemons cannot help, I have a lime that produces fruit - getting fed up of limes.

Is there a B&Q near enough?
Buy their large bags of compost, 120 litre I think. Quality can be variable, think that different stores make use of different sources. But as compost it is about the least costly. But the damn bags are big. Also compost is fine for altering the soil structure but no use for nutrients. For nutrients you need manure. So expect to need a bag or two of manure also.
