I may return to this subject later on in the year when the temps in the PH go down again (been almost 100) recently- probably try something with a bit longer germination time like onions and sow them in containers - be easier to count too. :-)

Chitting seeds

I chitted my beans (2017 saved seed - unknown variety - possibly Blauhilde?) this year, after about a week on a damp paper napkin in a closed, but not sealed box, they had pretty much all shown first root (and some had sub-roots coming off that).
I chitted some peas (2018 harvest hurst Greenshaft (from new-bought seed that year) as above. Most went mouldy and did nothing, probably 1 in 10 showed made a root. I soaked another batch for 24 hours and then chitted them - I had about 2/3 showing a root
