  • Sowing all things Cucurbit - 2019

Cucurbits - members of the Gourd family - includes cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, courgettes, melons and more that I can't remember!!

How many are you sowing & growing in 2019?

    Please share your progress.

Ignoring conventional advice, I sowed 6 courgettes (Zucchini and All Green Bush) and 6 Beth Alpha cucumbers on 14th January.
I ended up with only 4 courgettes and 6 Cues.
They've been in the GH for a couple of weeks, covered lightly with bubblewrap overnight.

    Today -

I sowed 4 seeds of Atena Polka (courgette, yellow), 4 of zucchini, 4 of cucumber marketmore, and 6 of some butternut squash on the 2nd of February. All 4 of the Atena Polka are up and 1 of zucchini. Nothing else has decided to show up. I am going to give them a little more time before giving up on them.

I will be sowing the first cucumber Cucino for my friend's greenhouse at the end of this month. After that I'll sow more cucumbers, courgette zuccini (probably 3) and melon Alvaro and Magenta (2 of each) when the weather warms up a bit. I'm not keen on squashes or pumpkins at all, so I give those a miss.

Nothing down yet, but will be growing cucumber wautoma again. Also trombos after last year's success, and spaghetti squash again. Haven't decided on courgette or winter squash varieties yet - so many too choose from!!!
            Another happy Nutter...

I have sowen seeds from one of the trombos I grew last year, doubt if they will come true as there were some other cucurbits growing close to them, I will wait for a month before I sow the bought seeds
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I will be growing cucumber - chinese slangen and a small white pickling variety whose name escapes me just now. Melons - petit gris de Rennes and a Polish watermelon whose name I can neither spell nor pronounce but the packet has a nice picture and my son was suitably impressed and desperate to grow it.
Pumpkins - mostly winter squashes - Marina di Chioggia, Thai rai kaw tok, Kabocha, Black Futsu, shishi gatani, an acorn squash named Table Star and Waltham Butternut.

Cucumbers: Socrates, Mini munch and Beth Alpha

Squash: Uchiki Kuri, Sweet Lightning, Thelma Sanders, Festival and Yellow Scallop.

Pumpkin: Jarrahdale (or Queensland Blue?), Flat White Boer, Rouge Vif d'Estampes If I can find the room I have some seed from an enormous (24 stone!) pumpkin to try

Courgette: Tromba d'Albenga, Partenon and Romanesco.

I shan't sow these (except a mini-much cuc) before April, as the plot isn't reliably frost-free until mid-May, and they grow big too quickly to stay on the greenhouse bench.

                        Afternoon,

If i was to plant 1 or 2 "special" winter squash only, whats your favourite to grow?
It's has to rate highly on the edibility scale and be productive

                        I've currently planted;
                        Courgette, both yellow and green
Pumpkin, amazonka, mammoth and last years saved seeds from carved pumpkin (bought)
Squash, Juana, crown prince as well as this internet collection
