  • Magic Seeder - any good?

hi i was just wondering if anyone has used a pro seeder or magic seeder, i am not very good at sowing seeds thinly, i saw one of these advertised and thought it might be a way to sow the seeds so i don't have to thin them out, hopefully they will disperse only one seed to my little pots.
anyone used these and did they work.

Don't waste your money! I thought the same thing, it is useless, e.g carrot seed, sometimes it will drop 1 or2 then sometimes none. Poor product!

Dont waste your money i thought it was a good idea with small flower seeds such as lobelia but then i found out the seeds would sometimes get stuck and like someone else said you sometimes get one, sometimes two and sometimes none atall.

Just sow a pinch into small pots and transplant when they have 2 true leaves and you can grab hold of them.

I'm another in the 'No' camp, I'm afraid - if seed are so darn small that you cannot sow one from another individually, then a small pinch as Zaz says will do the trick. It you are bent on a sowing aid, use a piece of A4 with a crisp fold to channel the seeds.

Our own dear Jacob Marley commented when this subject came up previously that these seed sowers were the devil's very own. If I can find his exact words, I'll post 'em up - his phrasing really made me laugh!

                  This must be a first.

They say ask two gardeners the same question and you'll get three answers. Yet here we are all in unison. Oh and me too I found the seed dropper I tried useless.

When I remember, I use one of these. Its calibrated for ?6 dfferent seed sizes and does control the flow of the seeds somewhat. Not fool proof though

mix the seeds with wallpaper paste and sow them with a syringe. paste needs to be fungicide free. Never done it but sure I read that somewhere.

                          Magic Seeder - any good?

Hi, I always sow tiny seeds far too thickly and have been looking at the 'magic seeder' type of syringe which promises to sow one tiny seed at a time. Has anyone used these? Are they any good? Does anyone have any recommendations? I would like to try and sow in modules and reduce the amount of pricking out I always end up doing.
                          thank you

various tricks to sowing seed thinly - I usually use a sheet of white paper with a crisp fold in it and tap it on my left hand while holding it with my right at a slight angle to the horizontal.

Other options include mixing the seed with dry sand before sowing or making a water based paste out of starch and stirring the seed in to that.
