Carrots and parsnips are the same family and so suffer form the same pests and diseases. The most common problem with parsnips is canker, which often enters through minor surface damage thought to be caused by carrot fly larvae, which are much less inclined to tunnel deeply into parsnips than carrots. So, the most important question is was there any sign of damage or surface tunnels/brown patches on the parsnips? If there was then this could mean that there are carrot fly pupae in the soil and these could hatch this year and devastate your carrot crop even if you net it.
From the feeding point of view, when I grow carrots in used compost I add bfb to the compost at sowing time, and that's about it. I could probably get bigger carrots if I fed them again later, but I don't want very big carrots so this method suits me.
