  • Leaf mould in dalek?

A friend has offered me a free dalek compost bin - has no lid though. I just bought a new compost bin so do t need for that. I did wonder though if I could use it for leaf mould. I currently have last years leaves in one of those pop up fabric type bins. Would a dalek be better ? I could put carpet or plastic on top. Given people often use bags am guessing you don’t want much air about it?

Exactly the opposite for leaf mold, you need lots of air, usually you make a bin out of chicken wire to allow the maximum air possible.

This is true, but over the past 2 years i have put mind in a dalek with lid on and just turned it every so often.....and its actually come out ok. Some people (Monty Don included) say to just put them in bin liners with a few pricked holes. So it will be fine, better with no lid xx

I was confused about whether it needs air or not. I’ve seen the suggestion about an open bin with chicken wire but also the idea of putting it in bin bags with a few holes. Seems contradictory to me.
