  • tomatoes how much space

when growing tomatoes in a greenhouse what space do you give between plants?
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

    Vine or bush?
I usually plant one for every 2' pane of glass. In a wide bed, I plant Vine at the back and bush in front, diagonally, in a sort of W shape.
Little toms are in pots on a shelf about 6" apart.

    As clear as mud??

Last year I had 20 plants, 1 every 2' down each side of a 20'x8' greenhouse and yield was about 5.5kg per plant though each plant had 2 vines on it as I let the first sideshoot develop. They had all been grafted and planted in the soil. I'm about to graft this years in the next few days but not sure how many to plant as last year was far too many but was it the exceptional weather? Will plant them 2' apart again but may be only 15, all vine varieties.

I grow in flower buckets. Indeterminate varieties are grown with the buckets touching each other (i.e. about 1ft apart). Its closer than you're supposed to do. I also don't take off the sideshoots but support the shoots with additional strings. The greenhouse gets a bit full .

Determinate varieties I grow on a workbench (or outside) with more space. The workbench lets them hang down without touching the ground.

I have 6 x 6 greenhouse, with gravel beds each side.
I plant in 5g buckets with a large hole in the bottom.
I'll usually have 3 buckets down each side and one in the back pane.
Basically one bucket for each 2 foot pane of glass.

then might try and squeeze something like chillies somewhere behind.

I aslo have one variety of small plum tomato, where I cram 2 maybe 3 plants in a bucket and let them go wild.

Im going to use grow bags again this year, I found it gave me a bit more height, and got an extra truss or 2 compared to the big pots I used the previous year

I'm not sure if I should try for 3 plants per grow bag rather than the 2 I had in each large grow bag last year though

I usually have 6 cordon plants in about 10ft of space, upping to 3 plants per bag would make it nine plants in the 10ft, I think it should be ok

Ideally I want to try growing direct in the soil, but it means lifting up a load of slabs, and gravel that can wait till next year I think

I calculate that was over 17 STONES of tomatoes!!!!!! That’s awesome- and slightly scary.

They are on an old damp shirt in an old heated propagator, stood in a dark corner of the kitchen and will have a clear plastic top on it to keep the moisture in.

I plant in buckets and leave about 18inches between each plant.
I also let most of the plants develop 2 side shoots.

I used to grow in growbags but I found that different varieties grow with different vigour so in some cases the weaker plant got swamped by the stronger. So I grow in separate pots. I also plant them right at the bottom of the pot and then top up the soil as they get taller that way I get the maximum height.

I have an 8 x 6 greenhouse and grow 6 down each side which leaves enough space for a cucumber on each side as well. I then also add in around 6 Chilli Plants.

Toms are three per grow bag and cucs and chillies are in pots. I do use the growing rings as those extra inches make a difference.

I grow in individual posts. A double row of 20 along one side of a 10x6 gh. Am going to do less inside more outside this year. Maybe 12.
