Asparagus help

In a moment of madness, whilst left unsupervised in a garden centre, I bought two asparagus crowns (whatsit super colossus), to fill the gaps in my bed.


None of mine have shown yet (there should be a fair few that should sprout), and I'm away for a few weeks in a few weeks. How long are shop-bought crowns likely to keep in a dark box in a cool garage?

Can't you just bung them into a pot with some compost and then leave them in the garage?

I think the main thing is to prevent the fleshy roots from drying out.

I can do that. Will that make them more difficult to transplant?

How big a pot do I need? just enough to cover them, or big enough to grow in

If you are intending to plant them out when you get back then I would suggest a deepish pot big enough not to dry out is all that is needed?
If it's a light enough compost then you should easily be able to gently shake them apart when the time comes to plant out.

I soaked mine in a bucket of water in the greenhouse to allow the roots to plump up. It worked a treat and little rootlets were even starting to form when I planted them out after a week or two.

Would be best to plant them before you go if you are away for a few weeks - unless you don't know where yours are. If so plant in pots in the light rather than a dark garage I would have thought. Hopefully, yours will show where they are before you go and you can plant them permanently then.
