Moving seedlings out

Have started some peas and beetroot in the greenhouse. Now in cold frame mostly. Was wondering when I should move them out to the beds. The beetroot are still in modules do not that big / growing rather slowly. The largest peas are 10-12cm and not loving the heat over the last few days in my gh. Have spent last few days in cold frame with lid propped open all night.

Peas should be fine to plant out. Beetroot does start off rather slowly - if you don't have a slug problem you should be fine to plant them out now, if slugs are an issue I would let them get to a reasonable size before planting.

Bit the bullet and put the beetroot out in the bed. Hopefully get the peas out next week if my hubby builds a frame for them.

Annie, for goodness sake, don't wait for your husband to build a frame, your peas may never go out. Just whack some twiggy sticks in to the ground in two rows to make a rough arch and get em planted out

The trick I find is to get him to do what you want as procrastination from something else. He’s mid way through painting the outside of the house so is desperate to have something to do other chipping paint off the windowsills. So I am fairly confident but to be on the safe side I I’m going to Homebase tomorrow to get the canes. Am growing alderman peas and borlotti beans this year so pretty tall. Need a decent structure I think. Also got sweet peas ready to go out so need a wigwam for them.

Beans like canes to twine around but peas prefer netting or twiggy stuff that they can cling onto with their tendrils. So you have 2 structures to offer OH as a distraction.

My Neil is like that! For past two YEARS he's been telling me to hang fire on filling the allotment with crops as he's going to pull down a couple of dilapidated structures (shed & polytunnel frame) so this year I've got myself a 2nd plot on which to grow my veg so original plot can be kept free to become a building site. Haven't told him about the 2nd plot yet

Peas are easy.....I saw a video about building a pea frame with just chicken wire & canes somewhere on Youtube I think it was.....going to try it myself. I'll see if I can find it.....

You can just use twigs and branches from hedges for peas - they grow by clinging on to sticks - I usually cut some spare sticks in the winter so they don't have any leaves on them, but you can still cut some now no problem.

Oh ye of little faith. He got the canes and the basic frame up for the peas. Definite progress!

Peas and broad beans in

Got my mange tout in and mulched round the broad beans I put in the other day. I'm using weedy self seeding saplings that self seeded for pea sticks and will be putting some twine round for extra climbing grip on Saturday morning. I've never done a photo attachment into a post here before so hope it works (but expecting it not to! 😁 )

Well done ! Beetroot and peas out. Peas are looking great and happily climbing up the string on their new frame.
