Wasabi- anyone grow it?

I sort of impulse bought a wasabi plant at Cardiff Flower show.

I got a little care sheet with it, but it's a bit short, and I wondered if anyone on here's grown it? Specifically, I'd like to know if anyone's tried growing it in a pot, 'cos I'll likely be moving house next year, and I wouldn't want to dig it out of my allotment in the middle of summer to move.

Any sushi fans around?

My understanding is you harvest the root to make a paste in the same manner as Horseradish, so you will be digging it up anyway.

Sounds wonderful, great impulse buy.
If it grows as easily as horse radish, it's really easily to propagate, simply place a piece of the root back in the ground for future harvesting.

Wasabi is sadly not nearly as vigorous as it's cousin horseradish. It's rather slow growing, and is quite picky about it's growing conditions.
There's a reason that most "wasabi" you find in restaurants and the like, even in Japan, is actually horseradish dyed green.

All of the plant is edible you can add leaves and flowers to salads. I bought one to grow this year but it randomly wilted and the company I got it from was not helpful. They grow in shade and need moist soil apparently. Pot should be fine.

I almost bought one a couple of years ago but it was expensive and my other half stopped me . I think the key thing is never let it dry out.

Like ameno says, if they were easy to grow, there wouldn't be so much fake wasabi around, but you might get lucky.

I saw a program on the telly where they did a session on wasabi plants. They grew in a gravel bed in quite heavy shade, so it might like the UK growing conditions!

Maybe I'll finally get some benefit from having the shadiest allotment on site!
