Look at some runner bean varieties. I grew enorma and would say the bean is kind of a kidney/butter cross. I've read that White Emergo Runner beans will produce butter beans.

I've had some success growing things like peas and beans from dried ones bought from a grocer's, so thta might be worth a try - cheaper too :-)

I'm growing lima beans this year - probably got 20 odd plants more than ready to go out, but I suspect they wouldn't like it just yet, so they're romping away in my kitchen.

I'm also growing a number of different runner beans, for their beans. Blue lake is one variety, can't remember the rest. Scarlet Emperor produces nice beans apparently, so growing loads of them.

Butter beans would need to be grown under cover in the uk to be successful, you might get lucky if the weather is with you, but unreliable.

Burnie, I've grown the butter beans (from the link) every year since 2007 and they've always been grown outside. I can only remember a single year with a poor harvest because of the weather, but I suppose it would depend on your local climate. I doubt they'd like growing in Scotland

Yes, I'm very aware that I may not get a crop at all of beans to eat from the limas, but I'm having fun trying And I have a decent size polytunnel ready in the next couple of weeks, so I'm hopeful, but realistic

A polytunnel will help no end, good luck, they are my all time favourite bean, just no chance of growing them in Scotland without a lot of heat sadly.
