  • Sweetcorn query...

    Hi,

This is the second year I've grown sweetcorn, last year they were palestcream/white, hard and needed to be thrown out, so I thought.

This year I've just picked the first, the biggest with the brown shrivelled tassle, it's the same colour but the corns are juicy when popped with a finger, i's definitely not of the stature or colour of a commercial one but are they dyed??? I buy organic when I can but they are still a lot more yellow and plump, as my 8 y o is a sweetcorn fiend, I don't want her getting tummyache - is it OK to eat???

    Thank you!!!!
    Beth

Some types have white kernels. Do you know which one you grew?

The one we grew, Bonanza HF1, looked just like the ones we buy in the shops, but was loads better, of course

I think the time between harvest and eating can have an effect on the colour. In my view pale equals juicy and tasty whereas shop bought yellow equals dry and tasteless!
Do as Bob Flowerdew does and run with the cobs to the pan, or better still, eat them raw!

          Hi
Was it the one -non F1 - from Real Seeds, this has white and yellow corn on the same cob? I think you're meant to stick a thumb nail in one and see if it's soft and a white milky liquid comes out - then it's into the pot.
          best wishes

Thankyou v much for the courgette cake recipe you posted in DDL's thread, delicious and much better than the recipe I've used up till now.
I did find that if you didn't mind smaller cakes you could get two out of the quantity which made it very economical - about 36 slices! Good for slicing, stayed firm so you could slice very thinly. And also I felt there was a slight hint of ginger in the taste so the next time I made it I added chopped crystalised ginger and ginger syrup and it was lovely - love ginger...
Have been grating courgettes and marrows to go in the freezer so I can make this courgette cake through the winter.

My Tuxedo sweetcorn was very pale, almost white. Tasty though

              Hi,

Annoyingly I've chucked out seed packet during a clear out, so not sure what they are but I think it's worth a try, looks in good condition except colour. Thanks for getting back to me. Beth

                Hi,
Not sure what type they are now as stupidly I through out the packet while recently having a clear out but I'm going to try it. I just dicovered your site, wow it looks great, I'll return for a leisurely read later. We returned from my Dad'd last friday, he lives near Limone,East of Cahor in the Lot/46 region. We adore it there.

                Thanks for your reply.

                    Hi,
Wow, so glad you liked the cake. I'm going to try it with ginger next time and what a fab idea to freeze ready, I'll do that too.

                    Thanks Beth
