  • pea weevil SOS

Never grown peas before. Decided to this year. Am pretty sure that they are being destroyed by pea weevils. They aren't getting beyond a few inches and have perfect little half moons missing from the edges of all the leaves. Books all telling me that the pea plants should be ok and will get over it and just to wait but at the moment I'm not convinced. Anything I can do? Other plots at the allotment all enjoying bountiful pea plants at the moment. Any suggestions extremely welcome. THANKS!

try putting some pieces of newspaper down on the ground next to your plants, then give the pea tops a good shake - if you are right the you should see weevils falling on the paper and you can collect them up and dispose of them - repeat as seems sensible.

They can also be resistant to pyrethroids.
Planting a different plant in that location might be the lesser of two weevils.

The notches are indeed from weevils, but generally speaking that's all the damage they do and should not stunt the plant at all.
I suspect something different may be eating the roots. Try carefully digging one up and checking both the roots and, especially, the buried section of stem for damage or tiny grubs.

Thank you. I knew the knowledge here would be ample! I will try as advised and report back.
