Suitable pots and fillers

Hello -

I have a few seeds I want to get in this weekend - carrots, spring onions and some herbs. I only have 2 containers left and they are massive. One is an old recycling box measuring 50cm by 38cm by 32cm - I put my courgettes in one of these and they seem to be doing well so far. The other is a plastic round container - 40 x 37. First of all can I grow the carrots and spring onions in the same container and also, is there something suitable I could put in the bottom of the container before the compost as I'll need at least 2 bags just to fill it up? I hope this makes sense...

I grow carrots and spring onions next to each other its supposed to help keep away carrot flies.

Yes you can grow spring onion and carrot beside one another and as you want to grow carrot you could mix some course sand in with the compost or soil whatever is the cheapest the sand is generally less than half the price of compost and you can pick it up at most building supplier

Carrots would like a bit of depth for the root,have you got any old compost? I use my old tomato/potato compost for carrots & cucumbers.

I usually fill the bottoms of big containers with old compost from last year's pots. Or sometimes with well-rotted manure, if I can get some for free. Garden soil works, too.
