Leek pest question

My leeks last year possibly had miner (i found one or two tracks and a bug that might have been a miner. They grew very slowly but evenly). This year my garlic definitely has rust and it's in the middle bed of a block of beds.

Annoyingly my choices of beds for this years leeks are limited to either diagonally 1.5m away from the rust or about the same as from last year's possible miner.

Any thoughts?

Both Allium leaf miner and leek moth are flying moths. Crop rotation will do nothing for you - if the moths are in your area, they will find your leeks.
That being the case, cover with insect mesh to protect against leaf miners and leek moths, and rotate to get away from the rust.

the problem is allium leaf miner is relatively new, but a lot of gardeners are not and they continue to grow leeks through the winter and when they harvest them and find ruined plants they peel the stems down till get to a good bit , and throw the waste in the compost bin where the puppa wait and hatch out ! iv'e seen it on my allotment ,but its no good saying owt they have allways done it like that ! chives and perpetual onions can arbour them also ! I don't grow leeks any more . atb Dal

I read this and then I noticed rust on my 3rd year chives at the allotment so dug them up at the weekend. So thanks for the info and hopefully my leeks will have a better chance of remaining rust free this year!
