  • Climbing French beans - time from flowers to harvest

My climbing beans - first ones I've grown even vaguely successfully - are flowering. A few of the flowers have now dropped off, leaving tiny little beans, maybe just two or three mm long. I've been looking on the Web for info about how long from flowering to actually picking beans and the various sites I've come across that talk about this say a week.

Does that seem right to you? I'm impatient to get picking, but I don't want to get my hopes up, only to be waiting a month and not a week.

I'd say a couple of weeks - and it depends on what size you pick them!

I'd say a week as well with plenty of warmth and water.

I knew there would be caveats and provisos as soon as I posted!

Anyway, good news for me. Thanks guys. I love, love, love, love, love French beans.

My first flowers on my climbing beans opened on the 24th July and today I picked my first beans......so about a week.

^Thanks. I'm keeping a beady eye on them. Mind you, it could be the equivalent of a watched kettle: a watched bean never grows. They don't seem to have done very much in the last two days. Or maybe they'll be like a Tom and Jerry character: lots of running on the spot as they build up speed and then suddenly shoot off.

Maybe I'm just getting ahead of myself and need to calm down.

Just to say I picked the first ones today. So around two weeks is about right for here.

^I'd send you some beans, but you're a bit far away for them to arrive fresh. Have a hug and a clever-clogs hat instead.

Once they come online you should be knee deep in them!
Had another pan full last night with my home grown spuds plus an Aldi chicken in the bag and 2 nice yorkies.
                      Yummy.
Any beans left get treated to a cold salad dressing next day.

Expect the worst in life and you will probably have under estimated!

I love beans, Jimmy. I could easily eat them three times a day. And yes, gorgeous cold in a salad.

I have lots of flowers on mine . So I am doing a happy dance, as it's something that's growing successfully in my backyard. Wooo! Hooo! It must be all that rain that we've had up here in the North East. Now, all I need is a little bit of sunshine for my tomatoes, & I'll be laughing. But I've learned a lot during my first year of backyard gardening. I now know that borage does not survive in pots
