Just back from Asda where I got 7 broccoli heads for 16p each so kind of thinking 'what's the point'? BUT I do like growing stuff and have just squashed yet another moth/butterfly in my sprout cloche. No doubt too late Still will try to squid any caterpillars and try the garlic spray thingy.
I at one time thought the same "what's the point" when you can buy your veg at such a price, but when you see the list of chemicals that are sprayed onto farmed veg I now realise that it is a lot healthier growing your own the one spray that I use is from garlic steeped in water with a little bit of liquid eco soap, you could always try boiling a couple of garlic bulbs, but be warned when I did this I was hunted out the kitchen and moaned at for several days because of the smell, but I see you referred to your husband and husbands are more tolerant about such things than wives are like bikermike i use enviromesh which can be bought second hand from berry growers in Perthshire (sorry I don't have an email address) or you could do as Snadger advised and get debris netting I would suggest that you get red netting as apparently plants grow better with a higher red spectrum also I have found that there is not the same pest problem when growing red cabbage. What ever you do enjoy your gardening and look on it as a pleasure not a chore, and welcome to the Vine...............
Hi welovezig welcome to the forum, I have pigeon problems also, so inept against pigeons and rabbits I also have a major slug and snail problem so its slug pellets for me.
For the pigeons I got a peregrine falcon decoy for 10 and mounted on the top of the clothes line. Its worked at keeping them away as I no longer have my 4:30 wake up call from the pigeons. I grow curly kale at present, I have some January cabbage seeds growing in the poly tunnel.

I have a plastic Falcon with outstretched wings hanging between two bean wigwams close to my brassicas. I haven't got pigeon problems now but the jury is still out whether the Falcon is the reason .Apparently pigeons are more destructive when they are feeding young earlier in the season?
