When stringing up my garlic today I had 3 or 4 garlic bulbs with a collection of small sets? on the stem s they would appear to be hard neck garlic as the stems are very stiff, can I plant these sets and if so are they worth planting?

Well I planted some this year, I think I started them off in pots last autumn, planted out before Christmas and they did well. Not as big as normal clove produces but big enough to eat. One thing though, they seemed to have a large number of small cloves themselves halfway up the stem. Though I did have an exceptional crop of garlic and onions this year. The soil was very fertile and plenty of rain when they needed it - and I kept it reasonably weed free till they started to die down. I don't think I'll do it again as I get enough from normal cloves. I read on The Garlic Farm website to do this every so often with the bulb-lets at the top of the plants to guard against disease building up. I keep 5 or 6 of the biggest bulbs for planting this Autumn. My spring planted Garlic failed to set cloves so I got 1 big bulb - won't try those again.
