  • Bitter beetroot

So my beetroot (boltardy) has an unpleasant bitter aftertaste this year. I’ve not had this problem before.

Anybody know what has gone wrong? Perhaps not enough regular watering? They were a bit smaller than the last two years.

I’m just a bit disappointed, I love raw beetroot and now I have to buy it from the supermarket

Hi RSF, yes, I think it could be the watering. I haven't had a problem with beetroot, but a couple of years ago my swede were very bitter and unpleasant - and felt quite woody too - and I think that was because I hadn't watered them enough. It would make sense as they're smaller too.
Is it possible to get rid of the bitterness by roasting them and letting them sort of caramelise a bit? Good luck!

      Hmm, interesting.
I've tried all sorts, when you eat them they taste fine at first, but there's just this horrid aftertaste that just creeps up on you, no matter what you do...
They aren't especially woody, but perhaps a little drier than usual.

Thanks for sharing your swede experience.
I'll try again with the beetroot and keep a better eye on the watering.

What variety are they? Are they from seed you've saved?

Edited to add: Hello and welcome, Seaside Gardener.

They are Boltardy, and not from saved seed, just out a bought packet. It's a different packet and supplier from previous years, but same variety.

^Then yes, the problem is more likely to be growing conditions rather than the seeds. Might be worth trying a few more depending on your location (Suburbia sounds like the accommodations should be good!).
