  • Thin skin on potatoes

My Maris pipers are showing all signs of being ready, everything above ground has died back and they look to be a good size, however the skins are very thin, so thin they can be peeled with a finger nail. Do they need to be left in the soil longer? Or is this just how they're going to be?

Once they are out of the ground and in storage, the skins will toughen up.
    I think.
Sent from my pc cos I don't have an i-phone.

Farmers leave tatties in the ground to "harden" them for storage up here, if you only have a few you wish eat quite quickly, then eat them now, just like a Jersey Royal(or similar) the skins are soft on new potatoes.

Yes cut off all the leaves & leave them in the soil then the skins thicken up,then when you wash them the skin stays on.

If you like to eat them with the soft skins hen steam them until the skins burst and enjoy with nice salty Irish butter

It is also an old trick to leave to tubers on the ground for a sunny day or two to harden the skins, but this can expose them to pests!

As Can says, eat them with the thin skins on with a dollop of butter and salt..yum!!
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....
