  • Storing Onions

I've a problem this year as my onions have done too well. I planted extra as last year, we ran out about March time. They all grew big and have thicker necks than I would like. There is about 75kg of onion and I'd be sad if a lot goes rotten averaging about 2 to a lb.
I usually allow the tops to dry off, then tie up in bunches and hangup in an outhouse. A few usually rot but not too many.
This year though, I've tried drying them on shelving in a small greenhouse. The bulbs look ripe enough but the tops are still quite wet.
Does anyone cut the foliage right off, leave to dry and store in boxes? Would that work? All suggestions welcome.

Mark, I store my kitchen onions tied in bunches but the ones I've used for exhibition have had the tops cut to around 3" and then ripened off. They will store very well

Thanks for that reply. I think I hang some up that seem to be dry but the rest I'll cut the tops off, dry then store in boxes.

I cut the tops off mine to a couple of inches and store in little mushroom crates. Still eating the last of them, starting to sprout now as my storage area is getting a bit too warm. I don’t have anywhere to hang mine.

I am going to harvest all my Japanese onions today and I will put them in Te*cos delivery boxes which should allow a bit of airflow around them. They will be stored under cover outside until the first frosts, then moved to the shed.
Like a lot of people I have had an excellent crop of large onions which are too big to tie into plaits.
Each time my family visit they leave with a handful of onions.
