Senshyu - North Of England

I orderd some Senshyu onion sets yesterday, just because they were listed as an over wintering onion.
I'm hoping to have these, and then planted at the weekend.
Has anyone had any success with them.
How far north are you ?

I am in Yorkshire. I planted them for the first time last year. They were the best Winter onions I have ever grown. Good size, solid and only half a dozen went to seed out of maybe a hundred. I am going to grow them again.

They didn't work in NE Scotland, well not on my thin sandy soil anyway, they shrank.

I started pulling the odd one from May onwards when last year's onions ran out. I pulled them all up in June when the tops died (around the same time as my garlic).

Thanks. With our milder winter climate here in Cornwall I guess we may get some a bit sooner than that.

I could have started on them earlier, but I was still using my last years maincrop until then.

I grew Shakespear this past season but I have grown Senshy yellow succesfully in the past and we are just a smidgeon short of the arctcic circle- maybe a tad of an exaggeration but we are well north of Burnie

You do have Polar Bears close by lol.

At one time Senshyu were the only Autumn onion seed and set you could get. I think this is still the same with seed but there are loads of different varieties of sets now. I can't get my favourite this year at a reasonable price which is Troy onion sets. I have Radar and Senshyu plus red autumn onion sets instead

Senshyu have done well for me for the last six years or so should be fine for you.

Bah! (No obvious emoticon for onion jealousy) Mine haven't come yet. There is a beautiful patch waiting for them.

We just started harvesting our Japanese Yellow Senshyu's
It's not a good onion though, it has no kick. I doubt that i'll grow them again.

Oh, and I don't like the new forum, it might look fresh and modern, but there was nothing wrong with the old one.

My saved onions are just bout finished now so I think later on in the week I may harvest a few of mine early to tide me over.

Maybe the lack of 'punch' is down to the onions not being fully ripened yet?
