Giant onion lighting

Hi everyone I’m having a go at giant onions this year got some kelsae seed

We have heat in the gh but I don’t have any lighting now I don’t want to spend a lot but I have been watching allotment diary on YouTube and he used some cheap strip lights does anyone use these are they any good

What do I need as basics links would be good

I sow my seeds on boxing day in a heated propagator, I don't use light and have never had any problems, my best onion weighed over 5 lbs some years back. I do use mpc rather than seed compost though, just so they don't run out of food and grow individually in cells before potting on, all to give them the best start.

Before LED lights a lot of indoor growers used strip lights, often hanging them from chains so they could adjust the height as needed. Ordinary fluorescent strip lights will work, especially if your plants are getting some sunlight as well. You can also buy specialised bulbs for them if you want more control over the colour spectrum.

I sowed mine end of December and they never were under lights. They got huge. Pricked them out to individual cells and potted on twice before then went in the ground.

Many happy memories from that VC but disappointing that we have since lost our good friend Potty.

I presently use an 8 tube t5 growlampand these are available on ebay. I have in the past also used 4 economy light bulbs, the type that have mini tubes and have really low wattage and the onions did ok

I grew Exhibition onions this year.
I didnt buy the seeds until the end of January, and without consulting my diary, I've no recollection of when I sowed them, but probably late February at a guess.
I placed individual seeds in 1 inch peat pots, indoors on the spare bedroom windowsill.
After two weeks, any that didn't germinate got another single seed.
I maybe did about 20, and around 4 or 5 didn't germinate.

The seedlings were transplanted directly in to the ground still in its own peat pot (but again, I need my diary to hand for dates)

They were monsters, to the point that they are too big for cooking, but great fun and fantastic for bragging rights.

I don't recognise any onion being too big to cook . French onion soup is the ultimate . Super yummie
