  • Uchiki Kuri/Onion squash.

    I was watching gardeners world last night and was watching Monty Don harvesting the onion squash. It looked really colourful growing up a frame. I have grown other squashes and pumpkins before, but not this. Has anyone grown it and most important does it taste nice?

    Yes, every year - and yes, probably my favourite. I often stuff them with a savoury rice mix, top with cheese and bake, or just roast instead of potatoes mmm

      They're tasty, but the yield is a bit less impressive. They do produce plenty of fruit, but the fruits have a large seed cavity, so the useable flesh isn't so much.

        I don't think the seed cavity is any bigger than any of the other small squash, like the Acorn squash,though.
        In relation to the amount of flesh you get with the much bigger squash, with the same size cavity - I'd obviously agree.
        As there's only me to eat them, I don't have a problem with the smaller sized ones

                  I’m planning on making these mostly into soup. Last year I had two of these. I roasted them and made into soup with the skin still on. It went very soft and tasty in the oven. So if you eat the skin too it makes for a good yield.

                      Those look very large. Are they definitely Uchiki Kuri, and not some other type of onion squash (there are several).

                        The seed packet said Uchiki Kuri, that's why we bought them

                          My Uchiki's and Butternuts picked today, largest butternut in the middle is 16 inches long. Some of the butternuts at the end are still a bit green so will ripen these some more before storing.

ID:	2385614Soup as described. The skins/ rind included. And oh it’s goooood. It has onions pumpkin celery roasted garlic herbs and chicken stock. I didn’t grow the celery myself.

                              I'm another who's planning to grow Uchiki Kuri next year. I'm sure I've got some seeds somewhere as I meant to grow them this year (before my mojo left!) but if not I'll get some ordered ASAP
