what I did last year (and what I'm doing again this year), is to plant direct into the bed, but with chicken wire over it to discourage wildlife from excavating it

I was wanting to plant some in largish pots and put them in my pop up greenhouse over winter. Would this work?

Garlic needs exposure to cold(vernalisation) which encourages the cloves to divide and produce bulbs containing cloves as opposed to a single lump

We rent at the moment so I grow the majority of things in pots (apart from courgettes which I use as architectural plants in my gravel covered terraced garden)

I have some pretty large pots so may plant them out and hope for the best

Actually, I think I like the idea of a large single lump of garlic to peel as opposed to a load of small ones.
I wonder how big you could grow a single clove before it splits?
I know elephant garlic is like a large single clove but an actual large single clove sounds great. I wonder if it can be done?

This is the type I've bought, hence my comment about spring planting:
            https://www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk/product/mersley-wight

"Its mountain provenance means it is best planted in early spring in the UK, from late November in the south thru to as late as the end of March. The optimum time to plant is mid February."

That variety probably doesn't like being too wet? Oct-Jan is the wettest time of year where we are and it usually rains much less in February.

That's what I thought too - thank you I'll give it a go! The description of it made my mouth water, so I had to have it

I started my cloves of Elephant Garlic off in pots inside the greenhouse last autumn but once I saw signs of root growth I transferred them into a lightly larger pot and put them outside on the potting bench so they could be out in the cold.

MY mistake was not getting them in the ground this year as I meant to completely overhaul the allotment (but then life and depression got in the way and nowt got done! ) so they grew and flowered in 6 inch pots. I pulled them up yesterday and was surprised to find that the original single clove had split and given me a bulb! Not a very big Elephant I must admit but still enough cloves, once split, to grow more I'm going to plant them in individual pots today and then once they start to grow (and I have a bed ready for them!) I'll plant them outside.
If I'm not on the Grapevine I can usually be found here!....https://www.thecomfreypatch.co.uk/

I’ve just found one of my garlic bulbs in my kitchen sprouting, is it worth potting it up?

For the last few years I've only grown elephant garlic in 30 litre heavy duty pots. This year I planted in a raised bed about a month ago and it seems to be establishing really well. Only issue was the birds pulling them out and leaving them on the surface but I've now a put a net over the bed and all seems good.

Does anybody fertilise their growing garlic, either manure or other?
or does this make them go soft/rot

I'd use anything suitable for other alliums (onions, leeks etc) or just a general feed
