Try Kestrel. It's a brilliant tasty all rounder which boils, mashes, chips as well as bakes. To get size on them remove most of the shoots by cutting with a sharp knife before planting leaving 2 or 3 at most

To get the taste of the potatoes back then,it sounds like they were cooked shortly after harvest, the taste of veg just after harvesting is tastier, something to do with sugar & starch? Desiree & rooster are a lovely baked potatoes but they’re the only two maincrop I remember growing.

I find that Wilja are a great all-rounder and make good jacket potatoes. They are a second early but store very well and if you remove most of the shoots they grow to a good size.
