Has anyone seen any Anyas for sale (other than in huge bags via the internet)? I normally buy them in wilkos in the little bags but haven't seen any this year. They are the only thing my OH asks me to grow.

      Any recommendations for slug-resistance please?

I have trouble buying few enough seeds - I only have space for 4 first earlies and 4 maincrop. I don't want to buy kilos.

Charlotte are the most slug-resistant potato I've grown. I grow them as an early potato, they seem pretty hardy and are only a few days behind the first earlies. The slugs don't eat them even after you've left them in the ground to full maturity.

I haven't found a maincrop that the slugs don't like, yet. Desirée seem to be about the best so far.

(edit) Just checked the RHS site, it says:
Slug-resistant cultivars: ‘Charlotte’, ‘Estima’, ‘Golden Wonder’, ‘Kestrel’, ‘Pentland Dell’, ‘Pentland Ivory’, ‘Pentland Squire’, ‘Stemster’, ‘Sante’ and ‘Wilja’

        Good luck!

I have ordered Charlotte and rocket. Last year I grew Setanta but there were a lot of slug holes. I am pretty new to potato growing so I am going to mostly grow in big pots this year. We dont eat a lot of potatoes. I might get some international kidney as the flavour was great last year.

I need to do better with storage. the lifted early potatoes all sprouted quite quickly on me last year and I think they were too warm. Or maybe they dont keep after lifting??? I want to try an experiment growing earlies in tubs of just home made leafmould with BFB to see if they grow - it would be free(ish) and save buying compost. My leafmould is lovely stuff.
The other thing I was going to try is growing some potatoes on compost heaps made last year of cow manure/ leafmould/grass/ chicken bedding and manure layers. I have several suitable heaps and was going to try potatoes, courgettes and maybe winter squash. Possibly bush tomatoes in the most sheltered sunny heap.

Do folks think its still too early to plant some potatoes in pots in an unheated polytunnel?

The best maincrop I've grown for slug resistance is Carolus - it is also blight resistant and good in the kitchen. I've been told on here that Wilcos have it - and they do small quantities. I've grown rocket for eariles which are ok and not too much slug damage.

That'll do for me then. I'll probably just grow the one variety this year.

I've placed the order for 400 spuds, they'll be with me at the end of this month. Where the heck do I keep them all as we'll be giving them out just before the Easter hols

....and if they start chitting and I knock off the chits

can you not have them given out early with guidance to keep them in a well lit frost free place so that they can develop small strong stubby sprouts/chits ready to plant at easter. That way you are educating them a wee bit further in the growing process and oh, you won't have to store them in a well lit frost free place till easter

Last year I grew Charlottes in flower buckets and bags of home made compost and leaf mould, with some BFB. They did pretty well but needed watering regularly as they dried out quickly. That's maybe partly because it was quite course and unfinished compost.

I'm doing the same again this year, I planted a few bags about four weeks ago in the conservatory and they're just starting to home up. I've just planted more in bags outside, but will bring in if it gets too cold once they're up.

Got some Lady Chrystl (1st), Nicola's and Charlotte's chitting. Last year we did Belle de Fontenay, those cropped really well.

I've got a load of 12" pots in the greenhouse with some left-over Accord from last year merrily growing away. Outside, I've just planted 2 long rows of international Kidney. Next weekend, weather permitting, it will be 2 long rows of Desiree and, if there's room, a couple of rows of Setanta that I have left from last year's crop, mainly for an insurance in case we get a bad blight year.

Casablanca this year. Just got 21 seed potatoes planted today in a mixture of old potting mix, unfinished compost, coffee grounds and fertiliser. Half in 10 L polypots and the rest in 20 L pots. In the greenhouse keeping toasty.
