  • Seed potato storage

Growing spuds (and everything else) in earnest for the first time this year.

Polytunnel and outdoor raised beds now 99% completed.
I want to plant some spuds in tunnel and others outside.

I have placed an order with the excellent Bridgend Nurseries
    https://www.bridgendgardencentre.co....seed-potatoes/
Bridgend have told me orders should be despatching from 6th of Jan.

My question is how do I stagger chitting and planting?

Tunnel spuds I will crack on with but if I wanted to “hold” some seeds for later planting outdoors, what should I do?
Just keep them in the dark in the garage?

You need to keep them cool too to stop them sprouting but not too cold that they freeze so an unheated garage should work

Like Mcdood says, you need to keep them cool but frost free. They are better off in the light than in the dark, because they will inevitably start to sprout as the days start to warm up and you want to avoid those long white shoots that they will send up in the dark. In the light they will just make short chits and will be fine until April or May or even longer. For example, last year I planted a couple of Charlotte in a bucket in July, they had spent six months on a cool windowsill but still gave me a couple of nice helpings of Christmas potatoes.
