Putting in an asparagus bed this year, what’s your recommendations for a good cropping variety

I've got 2 rows of backlim and 3 of gijnlim, backlim comes a bit later! They're very productive and we give bagfuls away in return for a few coins in our East Anglian Air Ambulance collecting tin.

Afraid I can’t help. But you’ve just reminded me, I can pick some asparagus for the first time this year . That’s very exciting. I’ll let you know if it’s any good!
Unfortunately it didn’t have a variety name. Got a couple of super cheap crowns from wilko. They’ve definitely grown well of the last couple of years.

I think I have another year to wait. They grew well last year in my herbaceous border where I am partly growing them for there decorative foliage (I would like to sample some next year though) Purple summat or other I think?

              Sandy, free draining
In that case imagine any variety ok, had you had wet clay like here then I would have said Gijnlim which seem to happily tolerate it best here

don’t want purples but do want high yield
In that case its male only varieities

Probably worth trying to buy A grade crowns if can, I have grown from seed and there is even then a difference in vigour between plants, as will be in for 20 years

We are sandy and free draining. Gijnlim works well for us.
BTW seaweed, and the accompanying beach sand you get when you fork it up, makes a good slug-detering mulch. It is originally a plant of the littoral so the salt won't harm it.
I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."
