  • Saved French bean seeds.

Last year I grew two sorts of climbing French beans. One sort was purple, the other green. They were side by side. Both sorts tasted great. I froze lots and they taste great out of the freezer. (The ones I grew the year before were a bit tough after they had been frozen.)
I saved seeds from both sorts but it has suddenly occurred to me would they have cross-pollinated. If I plant them what am I likely to end up with.
Should I just write them off.

FBs are self pollinating, (although they can be insect pollinated too), so yours should pretty much have stayed pure. I think they do their pollinating before the flowers even open (cleistogamy), sneaky things, like peas and violets.
    Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
    Endless wonder.

Even if they have crossed it won't matter if you liked both to eat. You might have green beans with purple stripes or purple beans with green spots - it make life more interesting when its unpredictable!

Wow! Great news! I'm going to plant them. If I end up with something picasso looking I'll post a photo!

By the way, when I say so blithely "I saved seed" what I really mean is that they grew so tall I couldn't actually reach to pick them.
