  • Moving Asparagus

I put six asparagus crowns in last year; in hindsight into a daft location. As it was, I gave up on them and, as there was nice compost there, I thought I might as well chuck parsnips in as the asp' had failed. Parsnips germinated and are lovely but, midway through the season, guess what? Yep, nice green asparagus appeared through the 'snips.

I'd like to move the crowns to a permanent bed with other perennial bits but do we think I'll harm them by doing so? I know it can be a temperamental plant that doesn't enjoy disturbance.

    Cheers

    Dave

I have only moved 1 year crowns, with as much soil as possible, they all lived fine. But brought some 2 year and 1 year old crowns a couple of years ago, they had similar survival rates of 50% so not clear age had any effect on transplant shock, time in post and lack of soil seemed to be much more of an issue

We moved five year old crowns. They were really quite big and some of the roots snapped but they survived and cropped well later the same year.

Thanks, folks. I'll have a go and see what happens!
