Storing onion sets in fridge

Evening all,

I had a bit of an impulse today and bought all of my onion sets for this year. It was only after I arrived home when I realised they wouldn't be planted for at least 2-3 months. They're currently chilling in the fridge in a mesh bag. Will they store until spring and will it affect their germination? Am keen to hear how others store their sets for planting.

I admit I've never tried it, but I might be a bit concerned about dampness in the fridge. The sets might go mouldy, or conversely it might encourage them to sprout (the can start growing at pretty low temperatures).

I bought some yesterday. I'll plant them at the beginning of March. Until then they'll probably live in the back of the car.

One thing to consider, have you ever seen onion sets stored in a fridge or a cold cabinet in a store or garden centre?

I am growing my onions from seed this year, and already have some about 4” long in containers in the poly tunnel, I plan on planting them out in an outside raised bed this weekend and cover them with some mpc to protect from frost. In the past I would have onion sets bought around this time but generally store them in the garage which is cool, dry, dim light and is airy, but not damp.

I've got some onion sets coming tomorrow, i'll just store them in the conservatory which is quite cool and airy this time of year. Will plant out as soon as I have somewhere to put them, hopefully in the next couple of weeks as long as the ground is not frozen. They are hardy bulbs and I have never had a problem with frost.

I too would not keep them in a fridge. Somewhere coolish and dry till you can plant them out. Dr. Hessayon says "Open package and spread out sets in a cool well-lit place to prevent premature sprouting.

I've got mine started in cellpack trays of compost in the cold greenhouse. I'm hoping to get them started off. then hardened off and planted out when we get the next mild spell. Mind we've had summer in February this last couple of years.

Mine are on the garage. cool and takeover damp free though it gets pretty humid in there with all the rain we're having

I'm trying an experiment this year. I will be planting onion seeds and harvesting them as sets for next spring so will be storing them in nets through the winter. curious to see how it works out

I've actually just found out this forum since I had the same question about fridges.
