  • What are these patches on my chilli leaves?

What are these patches on my chilli leaves? I have the plant on a south facing window-sill that gets lots of bright sunlight. The leaves with the patches touch the window - could it be damage from the glass getting warm? I have two more plants which don't have these patches. I water and feed them weekly (I use Chilli Focus), and sometimes water them more often if they are very dry.

Yes, they've got scorched. Just make sure the leaves don't touch the glass and it shouldn't happen, at least until it gets considerably hotter. Looks healthy enough apart from that.
Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing-'Oh how beautiful!" and sitting in the shade,
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel paths with broken dinner-knives. ~ Rudyard Kipling

I started them off at the end of August (completely wrong time of year, I know, but I only got into gardening at the end of summer and I was impatient). They predictably haven't fruited well. I have one chilli on another plant, but most of the flowers are dropping off. The plants look healthy though and their stems are like tree trunks.

Ok thanks. I'll try to keep the leaves of the glass.

Blimey. Assuming. You are in the UK and have overwintered them then well done. Plant looks strong so you should have a good crop in the summer

What does overwintering mean exactly? I see it mentioned here a lot.

daisy01 - My interpretation of overwintering is basically that you manage to keep a plant alive during the winter months when usually it would die off from cold and/or lack of sunlight. In the UK chillies would generally die sept./ oct/ but if you keep them indoors/warm and trim them back and give them some care and attention they *might* survive the winter and then *might* give you a bigger/earlier crop than plants grown from seed that year. (Never works for me but I'm a bit rubbish at growing stuff )

                    Hi Daisy, very healthy plant.
What it says on the tin, "overwintering" keeping the plant alive and growing over the winter.
Not easy with a chilli, which needs heat and good light levels.
                    Think you have green fingers.
                    Keep doing whatever you're doing.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I didn't do anything special to them. The room they are in is a like a greenhouse for several hours of the day, even in winter. That's probably what helped them.

Thanks for all the help. I planted a Serrano chilli a couple of weeks ago, and that's growing nicely. I planted lots of herbs on Saturday and they've all germinated, so I'm quite pleased with this year already.

Where are you living Daisy ? You must be getting lots of sun light to be growing at this stage.

God loves a trier Baldy, but I have no experience growing chillies, this year will be my first, so no advice to pass on
