Might seem a bit odd but we start most of our salad crop in modules and plant them out when they're about 5-10cm high, gives them a better chance against slugs round here.

Red veggies seem to be more slug- resilient than green ones.

I don't grow lettuce in the ground, only in the GH, because the chooks find it before I do.

        Aubergine Listada De Gandia.
Look like smallish light purple things.
        Try anything at least once.

Have you grown them, Kirk, or is it your plan for this year?

Just seeds at this point in time.
Slight catch is I have 10 seeds. So will start 3 off and see what happens.
            Only really want 2 plants.

Not great on aubergines as food but have a few recipies. Also picked up a book on roasting vegetarian and vegan dishes - I am neither, tend to follow the rule that if it doesn't move eat it, if it does move then hit it, then eat it. One day the robin will get it - any recipes for robin kebab around?

Roasting is easy - all in dish, oven, roast, eat.
Excellent Orzo one the other day - really easy.

Actually have to sow the aubergines soon. as in this weekend. They arrived last weekend.

Aubergines are great, they soak up the flavour of whatever you're cooking. They also make great chutney.

Isn't it getting a bit late to sow aubergines? They need a long season and lots of light and unless started soon won't be ready before the light levels start to drop at the end of the summer.

                Just a thought - I'm no expert.
I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

The packet I sowed this week says Sow indoors, Jan - April. Temp of 20-25C. Seedlings appear in 14-21 days.
Like so many things, bigguns need more time than the small but perfectly formed ones.

I gave up on lettuce growing a long time ago, but seeing as VC et al can't grow aubergines and are still trying, I'l have another go but with red lettuce.

I can always grow aubergines, but guess what, my seeds have all turned into mush serves me right for being such a show off

I sowed my seeds last year mid-April and started picking mid-August.

I grow small types, this year are Jewel mixed, Hansel and Gretel. Apparently you can harvest the fairytale siblings from golf ball sized to as large as they grow. All have germinated and are ready to pot on. I am planning on putting them with the peppers and chillies in my GH. The tomatoes will have to make do outside

The thing I grow best are very large slugs!

I've just resown my aubergine seeds, the seeds are old, so I've put them to chit in a paper towel to check if they are any good
