  • Aquadulce claudia beans - how tall?

My winter-planted beans look healthy and are flowering, but they haven't got very tall.

They are probably about 6" tall. Is this usual?

Beans don't usually grow much outside over winter, it's too cold. Provided the roots are healthy they should start growing on again soon as the weather warms up - 3 to 4 foot high is what I would expect - don't forget to put some supports in before they start podding up as the tops get too heavy for the stems - a few bits of stick or cane with some string or old wool wound round in a cat's cradle type effect will do the job.

Thanks - I hoped that would be the answer.

I was a bit confused by the flowering.

You're very welcome - probably the mild weather has prompted early flowering - I doubt they'll set, not many bumble-bees around at this time of year.
